Introduction
0100 Hours: A blast of unknown origin has rocked the Island of Manhattan.
Prior to the blast the Island of Manhattan had been under assault by terrorist/rebel forces. It is believed that they are responsible for the blast. The National Guard was locked in combat with the rebel forces at the time of the denotation. The status of the National Guard and the Rebels is unknown.
The blast came from an electromagnetic weapon. All communication with the island have been wiped out. HAZOP has been selected for this mission for three unique reasons. 1) You are the only FEMA operated disaster response team that is fully automated and has the technology to operate under these conditions. 2) You have extensive weapons training and military hardware. 3) Your new info-red satellite allows you to penetrate the electromagnetic fog, thus you can establish a connection with your machines.
Your primary objective is to determine the origin of the blast and assess the destruction.

I thought of Transformatron's AT heli, but there are SAMs around that I wasn't able to get rid of either. My computer has been broken for a week, and it's finally up again, so maybe I can try again. I'll need to reinstall EE first. Thankfully, my user created data survived.
By the way, is there a discussion of this scenario in the actual forums?

Three times three,
What brought they from the foundered land
Over the flowing sea?
Seven stars and seven stones
And one white tree.[Edited on 01/04/06 @ 12:34 PM]

Yes, have a search for 'Intrepid' under the author field and you should find it. I think there's a testing and preview thread on it. |

Die Machine Des Tages is an amazingly fun and complex mission. In this scenario (as anyone who's read the comments and reviews already up knows), you as the player command HAZOP. HAZOP is a team of 8 robots, and you are sent to investigate an electromagnetic blast in Manhattan. These robots are the cybers of EE, with different names and added powers. I found Cyclone's resonator (a standard Tempest power) particulary useful in this scenario.
On the way to your objective, you rescue civillians, fight rebels and terrorists who are invading central park, and destroy the biggest aircraft ever seen in EE, the Sky Carrier. This is the longest single scenario I have ever played or heard of, but it's really worth the time.
A really good player won't have much of an advantage over an average player in this scenario, because the new powers make it so different from normal gameplay. Adaptability is the key. On easy, Die Maschine Des Tages is as hard as an average scenario on hard. I'll wait until I have a lot of time on my hands to play it on hard. :-)
All the aspects of the scenario are superlative. Below are details on my opinions about various areas of the scenario's performance.
Playability: 4.7
This is a slightly weak aspect of the scenario. With such complex robots and such amazing powers, it's inevitable that the controls will be somewhat difficult. To activate a special power, you type a letter in the chat window. This means that a single command takes 3 keystrokes. Although this is enough to prevent a perfect rating in the playability area, this is not a big problem at all. Slowing down the game speed by pressing "-" helps issue commands more quickly, and familiarity with the interface is built in the (included) HAZOP training scenario. With such a complex campaign, this problem is unavoidable. It could not have been handled better.
There are a few minor bugs in the scenario, mostly near the end. Occasionally, two robots of one type will regenerate. In one instance, Cyclone couldn't move except in Turbo mode. Generally, these bugs can be fixed by reloading the scenario from a point before the bug manifested itself. Overall, Die Maschine Des Tages is remarkably bug free.
Balance: 5
The robots in the game are all very unique, and their powers are well balanced so that no one member of the team (with one exception) is more important than the others. If you find that you're not using one of the robots, you probably don't understand its powers. The one exception to this balance of power is Omega. Although this nearly-indestructable Apollo cyber has no attack, it can actually rebuild robots which have been destroyed! This allows your team of 8 robots to destroy about 400 enemy units in the course of the scenario. Other robots' powers might be more flashy, but none of them would last 10 minutes without Omega. Omega is also one of the most amazing features from a design point of view. Only an extremely experienced level designer would even know where to begin when creating a robot that can revive dead robots.
Creativity: 5
Creativity and Map Design are probably the strongest aspects of this campaign. The graphic resize effect was used well and proficiently, creating a 20-foot Pandora and a 2-foot Hades. The robot special powers are very unique and creative as well, ranging from the spontaneous generation of about 30 miniature fighters to a beam which freezes an enemy unit to a robot which can runs very fast, trailing flame behind it as it goes.
Map Design: 5
The map design is very realistic. The playing area is actually in the shape of Manhattan island, with water on either side of the map. The graphic resize effect was used very well in this area too, creating gigantic hospitals, capitols, and transport ships. Every inch of the island is filled. The city is based on a clever grid layout, and includes a large residential area, construction areas, etc. You see increasing devistation until you get to the absolute destruction near the blast site. At almost any time in the scenario, you could point to a special effect on the map iNtRePiD used that most people haven't even heard of.
Story/Instructions: 4.2
The story and instructions are one of the weak points of this scenario. The hints are very helpful for the most part, although those for Act IV are a little misleading. The story is certainly more than an excuse for big battles, but it does get a little redundant about half way through. I found the conclusion of the story rather unbelievable, and undeniably pessimistic about the future of the planet. Although I'm not particularly hopeful about the future of our culture, the conspiracy theory turned reality seemed rather far-fetched. However, I must admit that Die Maschine des Tages has one of the best story lines I've ever seen outside of the campaigns that came with the game.
Great scenario, great work, iNtRePiD! Die Maschine Des Tages will live on as one of the best user-created campaigns in the history of RTS!

I am glad you enjoyed the scenario.
The story really is just a vehicle for battles with these robots. I came up with the idea for these robots first; the story and the robot backgrounds came later.
The scenario is a bit critique of the United States and the current battle within the American government on how to protect its citizens and from terrorist attacks while preserving civil liberties. But the scenario does not in anyway reflect my views.

It would be a good idea include more background about you said about US Government and how to protect the citizens. A bit political campaign should not have some problem since the opinion of the author not has influence in the quality of the campaign.
The polemic is welcome. |
