Topic Subject: Error running the demo, I need help from you good people out there...
posted 11-05-01 01:15 PM EDT (US)
Well, I have finished downloading Empire Earth Demo with my 56K modem (Yeah, I know!). It took looong, and my parents will have to pay for the bill. Anyway, I installed and everything is right, except a but.
Games requirements are all met. I have 350 P2 and even 32Mb TNT2 video card. And yesterday I downloaded latest drivers and even DirectX 8a. Not that these things would care, as I cannot get the game to run. As I execute the executable, it tells me the following error:

The EMPIRE EARTH.EXE file is
linked to missing export KERNEL32.DLL:GetFileAttributesExA.

And only thing I can click on is OK.

I need help, so please could you...

I hate to tell you this, but the download may have corrupted something. As far as I've heard, sometimes the stop bits are messed up when you download via 56k.

Empire Earth is going to be released in about 8 days, why not just wait? Or, find someone who can burn the demo to a CD for you.

With the download errors, usually then the zip would not open. It opened, and installed, and... does not work or somethin'. Oh, I'll maybe try to redownload it again during night, and then I'll try to explain my parents the big phone bill... Any more comments?

Oh, wait. I need help...

Any more help suggestions?

Update all your hardware drivers and install DirectX 8.

I have got the latest drivers, yesterday downloaded from official website, and I know how to install them correctly. I also have got the latest DX8a and tried the reinstall already. Help...

Try re-downloading the demo. It might have dropped some bits.

ask someone that has the demo to send you the missing file

I did redownload the demo, now from the official Sierra website (love the neat little download program they have there). Exactly the same error, same place and same time. I can install and everything, but as I try to run it, it says the error. And I have got the kernel32.dll file, as otherwise my windows would not even run, don't you know that?

Are you sure you updated all your drivers? I had this problem with the beta, and installing the newest drivers for my sound card fixed it.

This may be a long shot, but since I don't have the beta (yet) I can only make simple generalizations based on experiences with similari problems in the past.

Check the installation configuration file (if there is one) and make sure it's pointing the EXE to the right place when it's looking for that DLL.

Remember, this may sound like complete BS, since I don't have the demo yet, but whatever...

Yes, I have got the latest drivers. And ThePerfectCore
, nice suggestion. Not a BS. But it is not the type of regular windows install (like in retail games). It is an archive, converted to EXE, by an install program. Maybe InstallShield.

I d/led and played the beta last night. I'll check into it when I get home, to see if I can rectify your problem.

Sure 'nuff, it has an INF config file, but nowhere in it does it point to the KERNEL32.DLL.

I don't think you've told what OS you're running yet... either that, or I missed it in an above post. Tell me, all you running Windows 95?

Well Falcon, I had the same problem. My problem was that I was running Windows 95. Got same error and everything. If you have Windows 95 the game will not run. Well if you have Windows 95 you should have upgraded at least to Windows 98. The game does state that only Windows 98, ME, 2000 will be supported. I tried the demo at work and it did not run, but when I tried it at home it did run. Of course I have other problems there in which it locked up when I hit the start button, but I need to research that more before I seek help. Hope this helped you out.

Now, hold on there, Piney Boy, it may be because he has Windows 95A, the first release (the one that was really buggy, or so I've heard). Windows 95B (of which I have a copy of) seems to clear up these problems. So, if he is running Windows 95A, then that may be his problem. He *might* try searching for "95 upgrades" at microsoft.com.

Just to elaborate on this ( sorry I didn't get here earlier ) problem...this is what's going on:

Your computer is initializing the Direct 3D drivers and getting an exported command that comes from the Kernel32.dll file ( this is the Kernel or BASE of your system. Any crash related to this is a WINDOWS operating system crash by the way ). This file, though, either doesn't exist or doesn't have the proper exports to support the Direct 3D extensions needed to run Empire Earth.

Every operating system has an updated Kernelxx.dll file (I'm not even sure Win95 HAS a 32-bit kernel since it was a 16 bit system). That file allows you to run the bit type of that number ie:

Kernel8.dll allows you to run 8-bit extention files ( not possible under any Windows OS known to man )
Kernel16.dll allows you to run old Windows 3.11/95(I think)/DOS based apps
Kernel32.dll allows you to run more modern 32-bit extention programs. This came out with Win98 ( I Think ).
Kernel64.dll this WILL allow you to run 64-bit extention programs, but it doesn't exist in the mainstream windows application software.

But if you see that problem or any problem relating to the inability of a file to access a kernel extention, you CANNOT run that program without a kernel update ( which MS hasn't done since Windows 95 ).

Oh yeah, stop bits aren't related the way you guys think they are. If they mess up, the download simply will not work. The CRC check will fail because the file will have been altered, thus changing the CRC value.

Stop bits have failed when you see something like "Bad_CRC in 0xwhatever" or something of the like.

On occasion you DO get bad Downloads, but it's not related to stop bits, it's related to network noise. just phone line noise causes packet/data loss.

YOU get this Error when trying to Run the Game on Windows 95.

You need to upgrade to a newer version of windows.
