Topic Subject: Crashing to desktop
posted 11-15-01 12:45 PM EDT (US)
When I try to start a campaign or random map the game crashes to the desktop, with no error messages. I had the beta and it ran fine on my system. Anyone else having this problem?

System specs:
Celeron 466
Soundblaster 64V
40 GB Western Digital HD

I have read that some people had problems with the TNT2 cards and the demo. Should I get a new card? All my drivers are updated and I have DX 8.0a. Any input would be helpful.

I think a vid card upgrade would be good for you.

Or, you could run 'dxdiag' through Start->Run.

TPC, unless he's a programmer, dxdiag won't be of much use.

I bought a new GeForce 2 64mb card today. Unfortunately this did not solve my problem. TPC, I ran dxdiag as you suggested and ran the tests, everything tested fine. Could you be more specific on how I could use this to solve my problem?

What OS and video driver versions are you running? If you are using nvidia reference drivers, bear in mind that these may be beta and are not supported. Using driver's provided by the card's manufacturer is a surer bet.

I am running Win 98 SE. I downloaded the latest driver directly from Visiontek, the version is I just reinstalled DX8.0a just to be sure, no luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Any thoughts on if this is a hardware or a software issue? I am thinking of reformating my HD and reloading Windows. There is a lot of stuff on my drive from my kids downloading everything in sight anyway. Space is not a problem though, I still have over 18GB left, and just defragmented a week ago.
I have a lot of PC games (over 50) and never before have I had problems like this. I have been looking forward to this game for over a year now, but I would have waited longer so that the game could be tested more thoroughly.
From what I have read SSS was pushed to make this release date, if this is true then hopefully they realize there is still many problems and that they are working on them as we speak. BTW, I have not given up on this game yet, I had the beta and loved it, but I still don't understand how the beta could work on my system but the full version doesn't.

I've had problems like this on similar sys specs. I find thatcanceling all other programs that are running helps to fix the problem. Also this happen when ever i've used the SCN editor if i then try to run a Random map or Camp it crashes it's not to bad Reminds me of CTD in AOE and AOK though they tended to do it in the middle of a game.

I have this problem happened to me particularly when I try to start the German Campaign. It doesn't happen all the time, but once in awhile, if I've been playing for awhile. When I reboot it usually fixes the problem.

Here are my specs:
P3 800
Geforce 2 GTS
Soundblaster Live!

Actually, I checked again, and I crash to desktop whenever I try to "Start" any Campaign. I rebooted just now, and it fixed the problem.

Any idea what the problem could be?

Your CPU could be overheating.
