The Alma Battle took place during the Crimean War on the Alma River, in 1854. Here the French and the British assaulted the Russian army foritified on the other side of the river. Historically, the Russian army lost the battle but in this high detail recreation, you have an opportunity to try and win it. Keep in mind this is a 100% recreation and therefore aspects of the map like a lack of cavalry or fixed artillery positions are necessary to stay true to the history. Please review it, this was my first scenario and I can use all the advice I can get, thanks. |

A scenario with good potential but not developed enough.
Playability - far too easy, you can win this scenario quickly first time.
Creativity - A carbon copy of many scenarios, a good idea but nothing new, normal features etc. This could be made better easily.
Map Design - Good tactical map, but hills too high, same terrain almost everywhere, repeditive.
Story/Inst. - This just needs to be developed more. Obvously you have knowledge of the battle but history is lacking. Intrduction could have been a cinematic.
Overall - this could be a good scenario if developed more, try to implement things like slower reloading or using a cinematic screen. You should also make it a lot harder. I suggest you work on it a bit more and update this file because it has potential - good idea, battles in this era are fun - but try to make it more comlex, try adding cavalry etc, if you can use these ideas then this scenrio could be lots of fun, good luck! |

The look of the map, as far as the terrain and the layout of hills and trees and such, while nothing spectacular, at the same time, it isn't what I would call bad. More attention to detail in terrain would have garnered a higher score for the map design category.
Creativity score was average, again, nothing spectacular in creativity, but I liked the idea behind the scenario, but was disappointed by the noticeable lack of cavalry or commanders (if they were there, I didn't notice them). The warships was a nice touch, but they just at there, and that gave the map a flat feel. At a minimum, at least some of the warships should have moved, or the author could have simulated cannon fire from the ships, just to add to the atmosphere of the map.
The scenario has playability value, because I lost the first time, and won the second time around. I'd actually say the map has as much replayability value as playability, because I feel that in this map, what strategy and tactics you adopt can very much affect the outcome. If you group your forces, as the author suggests, your chances of winning increase. However, some players like to try other strategies than those suggested by map authors, and I think this map rates higher than some others I have seen, where this is concerned.
The scenario has a background story and some instructions. While the story lacked depth, it was there. The inclusion of a pre-game picture, and the initial cinematic both were beneficial, I felt, and helped the scenario earn a 4 in the area of story/instructions. The cinematic started off good, but fell a tad flat, but overall, I thought it added to the scenario.
The scenario definitely needs more fleshing out, but also definitely has potential to be a very nice map. The reload rates need to be slowed down, for this era map, and perhaps the speed of the infantry units, as well. A couple of the cannon units didn't want to move, but most did, but I prefer all units available for movement, unless there is an obvious reason why they shouldn't move.
All things considered, I think that this is a decent scenario, and worth downloading to at least try it. It is not, however, a classic, nor even one of the better maps that I have seen. It is, on the other hand, better than the average map I download from the site, and as such, I'd recommend downloading it, just to see what you think. |

Playability: 4.0
An enjoyable short battle, all ten minutes of it that is. It is one of the oldest uploads in EEH too. Although there are only cannons and infantry for both sides, the player may be surprised that a variety of combinations of different tactical options can provide diverse results towards either victory or defeat. While not among the very best of its kind it will well worth your few minutes.
Balance: 3.5
I finished it in only nine minutes. Perhaps the absence of the +2 range bonus of friendly cannon could make it a bit less easy. Loss is a possibility only to him who doesn’t micromanage but truthfully such scenarios appeal precisely to the micromanagers.
Creativity: 3.8
The author knows his triggers, and for that he could have done a lot more memorable too. Some cannon emplacements are surrounded by impossible tiles, thus giving the options to set some of the relevant positions as main defensive lines while others as abandoned cannon fodder merely delaying the enemy. The author explains in his file’s description that this was done, along with not having any cavalry, to be historically accurate. Another plus for creativity is that this is one of the only two scenarios ever submitted inspired by the Crimean War (that I came up with by searching for the word ‘Crimean’).
Map Design: 3.8
A definite plus is the attempted recreation of the battlefield complete with all the hills and river crossings. A definite minus is that once the basic terrain was done (quite accurately too) the author didn’t bother to elaborate the elevations, use a variety of textures or add eye-candy.
Story/Instructions: 4.0
All of what is needed is covered and to the point. I would not mind a greater analysis of the historical battle in detail though.
Additional Comments:
Much of what could be further said is covered in previous reviews of this scenario. I recommended it for what it is; an exceptionally brief and decent historical battle simulation. Since the author is not likely visiting EEH anymore (a great pity, perhaps he left after his scenarios weren’t received as warmly as they deserved, 10 years back when so many other uploads seemed to be just wasting the downloaders’ time), I would like to indulge active designers to improve on this file (while crediting the original) in order to make it into what I have come to call a bigger, longer, better and more memorable EE experience.
