The map, itself, disappointed me, because the setting is Mars, and although there exists within the Empire Earth editor a way to color the terrain red and orange, the author made no use of color to enhance the gaming experience or environment. I think that this is a big mistake, and uncalled for, since the setting is the planet Mars.
The map does have some playability, but not a lot of replayability. I played the map twice, but doubt I'll play it again.
The alien artillery pieces are the primary obstacle faced by the player. Once eliminated, though, the player has little problem of completing the mission.
There just isn't much creativity used in this map, and that is a disappointment. There is a lot of room for improvement.
I don't understand why there is so much water on Mars, either. The landscape also lacks what I would characterize as a "Martian feel" to it.
The instructions as to what you need to do to achieve victory are clear enough, but the storyline is greatly lacking. Why did the spaceship land on Mars? Did the astronauts know about the presence of aliens before they landed, or did they learn about it, afterwards? One character had "hard" about thealiens." How did he learn about them? Did everyone else on the team know about them, and if so, then why would that character have to tell them something they atready knew? I think that the alien pesence would have been better handled as an unknown, with player objectives changing once the player encounters them. Maybe make the initial objective to find enough resources to repair the damaged ship.
Which, by the way, raises the question of, "Where is the spaceship of the astronauts that supposedly got damaged?" Was it damaged upon landing, or did they land because it was damaged? These things all go to storyline and plot.
If the author is making campaign set on Mars, I'll probably download it and try it, but this scenario is, for the most part, lacking in numerous areas. The author has at least some understanding of triggers, but triggers were used to display text, rather than cause events or to change the storyline.
My recommendation? Not really worth downloading, and has little replayability value. |
