Build and Destroy |
In this scenario you take control of the Soviet Red Army in an attempt to break the siege of Stalingrad by the Germans under the command of general Friedrich von Paulus and immobilize the entire 6th army.
This my third map. If you have remarks, bug reports, problems etc. please let me know. All comments welcome. My email is egt85@in-line.gr

This is a scenario that, when it started out, I felt was going to be a good one. The main complaint that I have with it is that the German adversary just waits for you to come and kill it. I just find that very unrealistic.
The overall layout is fine, and thought was obviously put into it.
However, since the German position is so passive (I think I did play it in the East mode, now that I think of it, though), the map is just too easy. Even on the easy level, it should not be this easy to win. That's not the same thing as saying, of course, that you will win quickly. You won't. The map is not a 5 or 10 minute game. That is for sure.
The author needs to let the Germans use those 3 air strips they start with. A random strafing run or bombing run, by a solo plane o by a group of planes would certainly increase the frustration of war factor for the Soviet player.
The German general you must capture isn't really capturable. The cinematic for capturing him should be moved to when that occurs, and not to the end of the game, per se.
Roving foot patrols and or roving Panzer patrols would be a nice addition. As the game progresses, once you clear out the German forces inside the city limits, all it is then is a game of just being patient until you have killed all of the German enemies.
Instructions are clear, as is the storyline. The initial cinematic should be slowed down a bit, though.
All in all, the map design is good, but the implementation could be better. I may try this one again at a harder level, to see if the German position is better. If so, I will provide another review at that time.
The Germans have a lot of units. Having fewer, more aggressive units would be a better approach, I think. Regardless, there needs to be aircraft to annoy and harass the Russin player. Also, while some maps suck with timer, this one might utilize one in a functional way. Since the German units must all be destroyed, at some point the tanks, at least, need to begin heading out. The Soviets are presently, on the easy level, lacking any real incentive to get in a rush about anything.
It's no a bad map, overall, or even in pieces. It just needs some imprvements, and I think it can become a real classic. |

Well, I had to disable all enemy AI due to a bug on the scenario which made ALL enemy troops to move on the northwest edge of the map |

That's what I've read in my encyclopedia. Gen. Zhukov contributed greatly to the turnout of WW2. (He was also the first to reach the Reichstag) |

Marshall Georgiy Konstantinovich Zhukov commanded anno 1939 some operations vs. the Japanese (Soviets helped Mongolia to repell jap attacks). In the summer 1941 he was assigned to command the defence of Kiew. In december 1941 he commanded Soviet troops in the battle of Moscow, and started the Soviet winter offensive 1941/1942. After Stalingrad was taken by Germans he commanded the army that encircled the city. The German 6th army completley surrendered. After that he commanded the troops on the 1th Ukrainian front, and later the 2nd Bielorussian front. In May 1945 his troops, along with the troops under command of another brilliant general, Konev, entered Berlin and ultimately won the war. He commanded the Soviet millitary until the reign of Nikita Sergeevich Khrushew, who accused him in planning a millitarist Coup and expelled from the political arena...
Oh, yeah, he had nothing common with the glorious siege of Leningrad. |

I am giving this a high rating on the assumption that you will listen to what I say. I did not lose a single man.... My men outranged the Germans by 2. Also the south that is fortified is easily leveled by howitzers, I actually captured von paulus first. You should put artillery behind the walls or increase tower range dramatically or take away howitzers from the Russians. You should put something in the city under attack so there is some urgency in building your own force. There is no way to lose this scenario, the Germans never attack you. I know you disabled the AI so you need to put some attack triggers in. You need to take away the tank factory since you can not make tanks. You might want to add the benefits from the American Lend-lease program (tanks, trucks, planes). |
