The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 1-month, 4 day (16 October – 20 November 1962) confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union which escalated into an international crisis when American deployments of missiles in Italy and Turkey were matched by Soviet deployments of similar ballistic missiles in Cuba.
Despite the short time frame, the Cuban Missile Crisis remains a defining moment in U.S. national security and nuclear war preparation. The confrontation is often considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war.
BUT!
What if the Soviet Union secretly supported the Cuban Revolution and backed Fidel Castro's regime earlier than in history? What would be the consequences of such an alliance?

This was a scenario I created years back, and I just revisited it. Hopefully, you'll enjoy!

Playability: 4.7
The trigger work is clean and solid. The cinematics run very well, without any problems. The flow of the game is smooth, and the updates via instructions are concise and interesting. The player begins in a very localized position, but then his responsibilities begin to pile up over time. This is not a problem, however I found it difficult to adequately defend and utilize each position. Perhaps that is a sign of my own shortcomings as a player, but such was my experience. High scores all around for this scenario
Balance: 5
I played on easy. I am a very conservative player, and prefer not to struggle to win games. Those of you who know me, know this is true. The balance on easy was perfect for my style of play. I believe I would have found victory on medium as well. Hard is for players like shieldwolf, who prefer to suffer
Creativity: 4.5
This is a historical scenario set in 1960s Cuba and the surrounding region. I don't believe I've ever played a scenario built around the Cuban Missile Crisis. Shieldwolf uses a lot of neat and tiday trigger work per usual - some of which is very creative. From the get-go, there is a nifty trigger for recruiting refugees - there are pop cap and unit cap related conditions which are classic shield. The story itself, which runs parallel narratives, is well done.
Map Design: 4.5
The proportions and shapes of the islands were really good. The flora and terrain mixing was good as well. Elevations were solid. The "cities" were somewhat lacking, though not bad by any means. I didn't notice anything terribly unique or memorable about a particular area, but the overall design was quality!
Story/Instructions: 4
This story is from history - however it is an alternate history. The player controls Manuel, who leads a resistance against Castro and the communists in Cuba. The use of press briefings and historical quotes was really cool. This added an element of realism, making the alternate history seem more plausible. The hints section was helpful. The history section was essentially empty. There were a small amount of typos/incorrect verb tenses
The parallel story, which I do not wish to spoil, was excellent. It is a personal narrative, and adds a really nice tough to the game
Additional Comments:
Although not as prolific a designer as before, the quality of content is fantastic as always. I hope you continue to design, my friend. Your scenarios are a joy to play!

Playability: 4.7
I liked the way the mission played. I didn't experienced any bugs, triggerwork seems to be done nicely. It was always clear what to do and i liked the lenght of the mission. Solid work!
Balance: 4.4
I'm a pretty good player, i played it on medium cause i wanted to "chill" and i thought it was too easy and had never the feeling that the enemy could be a threat, i'll try on hard next to see if it's more challenging. Imho, Cubas and the Soviets fleet could be stronger. I liked that iron was scarce and that you needed to conquer them first, but imho the stone is bit of an issue, you can just build bunkers everywhere what makes it very easy to defend islands. However, i think for the average player there are parts that can be challenging and i appreciate that you limited some units, gj overall.
Creativity: 4.7
I really liked the news, quotes and the story itself, i like alternative storylines ;). You created some nice creative things like finding refugees and i found the gold system to be a nice idea. Creative work for sure.
Map Design: 4.5
I liked the map you created. I liked f.E. how you made the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic and that you didn't make it that easy to create an airport (builded one on nicaragua with cutting trees and on in the bahamas island in the north where you need to clean the pumpkin field first). I appreciate that you took your time to make the seafloor looking good, i like that :). Some of the other islands could maybe use some buildings and life imo, good work overall.
Story/Instructions: 4.8
Not much to complain, the instructions was clear and understandable. As stated above, i really liked the news and quotes, good work.
Additional Comments:
I played alot of your scens and campaigns, it was always a pleasure to play them and this here is no exception. Looking forward for more ;). |
