The Epic: War of the Pagans

Author File Description

Style: Mix
Needs AoC?: No
This scenario is the consummation of the story of the Holy Roman Empire's campaign to rid Europe of the Viking empire led by a pagan madman. The storyline began a long time ago, in 2007, and now ends here.

I have amended this scenario to make it easier and player friendly so that you would enjoy it without extraneous strain in strategy. There are over three hundred triggers, and over seven hundred effects. The story is deep, and full of action, including great battles and build and destroy style game play.

Special thanks to Empire Creations, and specifically to Shieldwolf for faithful play testing and quality advice

Map Design4.8
The "War of Pagans" is the last installment of The Great Epic, a tale that spanned 5 years of excellent story-telling and more than half a dozen scenarios of action packed game play and design. It is rightly the crowning jewel among precious stones, a work of art, coming from a beloved scenario designer - Altec Tek.

Playability: 4.7
The game play is smooth, triggers are functioning well, the story was presented in a way that is most entertaining while being both functional and immersive. Some improvements could be done on having early units freezed during cinematics (these units sometimes get in the way of dialogues), some enemy units being left over during pivotal battles (Ocrist Hill, Sea battle and Leviathan Cove), plus tweaks on enemy attributes to make the scenario more difficult (not too much though, remember the early versions of the scenario :)

Balance: 4.5
I won't be rating this lowever than 4.5, since I know that balance is always a subjective thing. Let me point out that my rating is this because I did not experience having units lower than 90 popcap, and the fact that all I used were the starting units given to me, and that I have not gathered resources and created new ones (except 5 trebuchets). I feel that while this version is bug-free, balance-wise, it is very easy. I liked the early version in that the early version is more challenging (although there were parts during there that made the enemy invincible, which I think was an accident in triggers). Some improvements: give enemy towers being more HP and better range, more active AI garrisons on the military camps (they are sitting ducks for my trebuchets) and a limitation of trebuchet-making.

Creativity: 5
After half a dozen or so stories in the same universe, only a good story-teller can produce scenarios that can continue the legacy of previous ones, as well as give players better and even more creative ways of presenting the story behind the game. The way the cinematics have been made, the way graphic effects have been used, the way the map is created, all lends realism and boosts further the appeal of the story.

Map Design: 4.8
Solid, realistic, tactical in use. The countryside is superb, although some terrain mixing inside the cities (different shades of stone, some dirt and trees or bushes), can be used to improve on it.

Story/Instructions: 4.9
Not perfect for some spelling mistakes and trigger work on units getting in the way of dialogues. But don't mind that. What I like best in Altek's stories is the variety of characters his scenarios contain, and much more, his abilities to weave them in one coherent plot that will leave you mesmerized. It is this fact that makes him one of my favorite designers in Empire Earth Heaven.

Additional Comments:

Vali Porketyl's last words! Man! I'm excited on that. Either you have some more scenarios in store for us, or you'd have other scenarios related but not exclusively connected with The Great Epic! Hriakie perhaps? *wink wink*

Thank you for your review, Shield! I'm appreciative of your continued interest in my scenarios! It's players like yourself that make the process of designing worth it all!
shieldwolf23 It has always been a pleasure playing and reviewing your scenarios tek. I only hope you'd continue sharing us your imagination, visiting and designing scenarios from time to time. :D
JosipM I don't know if this is only for me since I don't see any other comments saying this, but when I reach last area, where big battle is taking place (one where Holy Roman Empire and player attack Sea blood dark red computer) my game blacks out and I get an error saying that EE must turn down. Any help?
shieldwolf23 Hi Josip! Sadly, tek has been busy the past months, and I have not heard of him since. Personally, I have had no recollection of the game crashing on me. How many times have you experienced this kind of thing?
