Here is a marvellous program for editing EE's .tga files (for unit textures)that I came across online. This program, writen by MW Graphics for Microsofts' Train Simulator, allows the user to open tga's (and the unit alpha channel) and send the image (or Alpha Channel) to MS Paint. This is by far the easiest program for editing EE units that I have every come by. If you are like I was -dying to edit unit textures but not having any good programs to do so - then this is definetly the solution to your problem!
-----------------------------------------------
How To Use
----------
Once you have downloaded the file simply unzip it and install it by clicking on the application file provided. Once the file has been transfered to your desktop your ready to begin.
(you must have the EE Studio utility to continue)
To extract EE's Data.ssa file you need to DOWNLOAD EE STUDIO which is also available on the EE Heaven site. Once the Data.ssa is extracted you must search for the file (in the newely extracted Data.ssa)that you wish to decompress using EE Studio's DCL Decompressor. Now view the decompressed file and save it as a .tga using "Convert SST to TGA.
Now open TGA Tool and load the new .tga. Now you can edit the unit alpha channel (which will appear on the right hand side of the screen) or the main image by clicking on Image > Send Main Image to Editor (or) Send Alpha Channel to Editor.
Once you have edited the file in MS Paint to your liking, you just close it off and click yes to save the file back to TGA Tool. Now save the file in TGA Tool and reopen it in EE Studio. Save the .tga to an .sst by using "Convert TGA to SST". Be sure that the sst you are creating from the tga is saved in your Empire Earth > Data > Textures folder.
Now your new texture is ready to be viewed in the game!
I am proud to upload this utility for all you EE players, Enjoy!

Re: (Chimp with a Gun) "hey could you explane more on how to extract"
I asume you are having problems with extracting the Data.ssa in EE Studio, but don't think your alone (I had some trouble with that at first. First off I'll be sure to let other readers of this review know that EE Studio is NOT included in this download, but can be had from this Utility section on EE Heaven (posted by The Great Briton, I think).
-1-
So once you have EE Studio installed you open the "SSA Extract" window and you will see the following text:
Please select .ssa to extract.
E.g. C:/Sierra/Empire Earth/data/data.ssa
This provides an example of what you must type in the lines below.
-2-
Now simply type in the location of your Data.ssa file, usually found in the path provided in the example (C:/Sierra/Empire Earth/data/data.ssa) but if otherwise type in your custom location for that file.
-3-
Once you have entered the path to your Data.ssa file press the enter key and the following text will appear:
Please select output directory.
Now type in a path (beginning with C:/) where you want the extracted data.ssa to be located.
Example: C:/Sierra/Empire Earth/Data/Data List
After this your screen should appear like:
Please select .ssa to extract.
E.g. C:/Sierra/Empire Earth/data/data.ssa
C:/Sierra/Empire Earth/data/data.ssa
Please select output directory.
C:/Sierra/Empire Earth/Data/Data List
Now press Enter.
-4-
Now will see a long list of files read out on the screen, let this continue until it has stopped. Now close the SSA Extract and open an explorer. Go to the file directory where you typed the output path for the extracted file and open the file folder that you may have named Data List (as I did). In this folder you will see another set of folders and among them will be a folder called Textures. This is where you will find the COMPRESSED texture files which you can now DECOMPRESS using EE Studio's DCL Decompresser utility.
I hope this answered your question, Chimp, please feal free to ask me more questions here in the review section.

Re: Have a problem with the way units appear in game.
This has something to do with the way you are saving the new (modded) texture you created. Most units have dimensions of 128 X 128 pixels, if this is changed that new texture will appear fuzzy and out of place. Whatever the dimensions, do NOT resize the object, otherwise this will happen! Most unit textures can actually be doubled in size to get a higher detail (resolution), but not all. Another possible problem I can see, is if you changed the mask (aka Alpha Channel: appears on the right side window of TGA Tool) and masked out some of the object. Just remember: black areas ont he alpha channel do not (or a appear clear) in the game, and white areas are opaque! Hope this helps :) |

Re: every time I load a .tga its not loading it
This could be one of a few problems.
1. Most probably means that there is an error, either with decompressing the .sst,
2. saving the .sst to a .tga,
3. or opening the .tga in TGA Tool
If number 1 or 2 is the problem, there is something wrong with the EE Studio which you have installed on your PC. This can sometimes be fixed by reloading EE Studio. If number three is the case, then you could open the .tga in another program, and re-save it and then open the re-saved file in TGA Tool. If you cannot open the .tga in a program that normal would open that file type (.tga) then the problem is with EE Studio and you should reload it. If the file will only not work in TGA Tool then maybe reloading TGA Tool or finding another location to download it would work. |
