So I guess we've got this idea of making a new EE-like game circulating. Honestly, I don't think we'd have that hard a time pulling it off: we've already seen how dedicated people like Ashrzr and JCGF are to getting stuff done in the context of EE.
Before we get a huge conversation going about all the crazy new bells, whistles and unit classes we could include in this new EE, I'd like to set down a few points.
1. FAITHFULNESS. As Xenophone/Soty said, STICK TO EE. I think simple aesthetic changes, like having different cultures for civilisations so not everything looks alike, or adding animals/trees/decorations is fine, but let's not go bonkers and end up trying to pack all the psychotic (and quite frankly bad) ideas from EE2 into this thing. Nothing too new.
2. PURPOSE. Think of this like a mod. Like EEv2, but better. We're not setting out to create the next big RTS, only an upgrade for our favorite game.
3. FEATURES. Let's try to keep as many of the features of EEC & AOC as we can (hopefully all of them).
4. COMMUNITY. Remember our audience here. The goal is not to appease the masses. This is an effort by the community for the community, and one that'll hopefully grow the community.
A word of warning though: 2 years ago, Penguini and some other dedicated members of the community tried to do this. It got too carried away, and people gave up on it. The website that was formed for discussing & developing the new game (Degrees of Zero) transformed into a web design company.
NOTES
I'll take notes on good/significant/important ideas that we come up with in this section. I've started by adding some of my own and a few that have come up recently.
OVERALL
-High-def graphics
-Windowed mode for sure. (Cseira Kill)
CIVILISATIONS
-Cultures for aesthetic differences/possible tech tree changes. (Ashrzr)
MULTIPLAYER
-This may be hard to pull off. I'd suggest that we collaborate with the Save-EE developers to make a functional multiplayer system based on something that's already familiar. Besides, we won't have to set up a server. (Cseira Kill)
-Warcraft 3-like support for custom games
SCENARIO EDITOR
-I think we should make this an external program, and let it be one of the few places we pile on the features. I'm thinking copy+paste, undo, easier trigger editing. (Cseira Kill)
