yeah ive tried out countering the zero rush (not in multiplayer, but 5 allied jap players vs me is enough rush for my liking), but i still stick with my strategy.
no airports, no problems
**edit**
PS: what i meant in my first message ( my bad i phrased it poorly) was that you have to place at least 5 AA defences to the one location to be effective.
Ie. Place say 5 or more AA emplacements near say a base camp or outpost area. Near the border buildings of that base camp, place a few more AA batteries. That way the aircraft may get split up, diverting some to destroy the outer AA defences, and thereby weakening the main attack, and if they dont destroy the outer AA defences, they will have their attack weakened anyway.
Repeat this at every clump of frontier buildings you have.
Then, in between clumps of buildings, place just a few aa emplacements to discourage and defend against enemy assaults by air. If you have your frontiers well defended, you will need very few (if any) aa defence moving towards the centre of your base. But realistically, after following my earlier strategy, just place a little flak everywhere.
***Edit2***
You mentioned that ICBMs weren't effective against zeros, well there not supposed to be. You destroy the hangers and airports with them.
apologies for the long post
